Artist Statement
Using gourds, leather dyes, acrylic paint, fiber, found objects, sea grass and pine needles I create unique, organic vessels. I utilize woodcarving,
woodturning, pyrography and weaving techniques into my gourds. As a former chef and culinary instructor, many of the unique designs and
embellishments that are inherent infood presentation translate well into this art form.
My interest in foods from different cultures has found its way into the design of my gourds. Even the tools and some of the ingredients from my kitchen travel into the studio. I work with gourds
the same way that I work with food. I try a little of this and experiment with new materials until it tastes right. I am also influenced by Asian and Pacific Northwest cultures. Each gourd is a completely new canvas. I hold it, feel its shape, weight and texture, taking in its organic qualities. I approach the gourd without fear. If I make a mistake, I just keep working with it until it is transformed into something new. Sanding, carving, burning, painting my way to a completed piece of art.
